WILLIAM (BILL) KOWALCHUK William (Bill) Kowalchuck, born on March 2, 1914, passed away February 12, 2004, at Charleswood Care Centre, at the age of 89. Predeceased by his parents, Maryna and Stefan; brothers, Carl and Nick; sisters, Lillian and Anne. Survived by his loving sister Sonja (Brian) Towse, sister-in-law Stephanie Stevens and many nieces and nephews. William was born in Cooks Creek, MB. He attended Zora School, and later worked in the mines in Sudbury and Swift Canadian Co. until he retired in 1974. William was born at a time when few had advantages. At a very young age his father passed away and he helped his mother run the family farm. He was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and loved the simple things in life, a flourishing wheat field, watching a garden grow, looking after his lawn, enjoying neighbours, church, community: truly a very special man, who lived his life simply and honestly. His great sorrow was having to leave his home to enter long term care. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staff and care workers of Charleswood Care Centre for their gentle touch and loving hearts, who made his stay a pleasant one, and to friends for their many acts of kindness, love and support. Prayers will be said on Sunday, February 15 at 7:00 p.m. in P. Coutu Funeral Chapel, 156 Marion St. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 16 at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church, Cooks Creek, MB with Rev. Fr. Taras Kowch presiding. Interment will follow in the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Charleswood Care Centre, 5501 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R3R 0G8 or Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Church, Box 35, Group 23, RR 2, Dugald, MB R0E 0K0.
